Log and Speck
8x10in acrylic on canvas panel.
This will be on the Store for a limited time.
I wanted to not take myself too seriously and do an illustration that has captivated Christians for thousands of years. A log coming out of someone’s eye is very silly, so it felt appropriate to embrace a cartoonish style of painting for a day.
Hypocrisy is something we all deal with on a regular basis. Jesus’ illustration from Matthew 7 beautifully described the absurdity of it! And yet… we are all somewhat guilty of hypocrisy. Yes, even pastors struggle with it. I am often “wheeling and dealing” with morality - especially talking about it… so Christ’s words to not judge lest I Judge myself is a gentle warning for me to be quick to recognize the LOG in my own eye and to be quick to take it out before I attempt to take the speck out of someone else’s eye.
The juxtaposition of the sizes of a log and speck also remind us that our own issues will ALWAYS be more important to deal with than other people’s problems. I am trying to get better at asking the question: “God, what sins are you patiently waiting for me to correct in myself?”
