“Cardinal”
8x10in acrylic painting on panel.
Here’s everybody’s favorite red bird: The Northern Cardinal
Of course, there are many great red birds out there, and some people might like other ones over this fellow, BUT many people are attracted to this memorable bird the most, and for good reason. It’s a beautiful creature! The black mask, the strong red crest that bold beak and some fun bird songs makes for a memorable bird. They are actually closely related to buntings, grosbeaks and tanagers, which also have a reputation for being stunning! (I’m sure I’ll be painting more of those breeds soon!)
While these birds are more well known in the northern parts of the United States, we have, on very rare occasions, sightings here in San Diego County. It is reported that we have a small localized population in the Tijuana River Valley, which is pretty neat! San Diego is honestly one of the best places to be a birder.
